Game Fishing Hooks

When we speak about game fishing hooks, we generally break it down into two categories. Trolling hooks, designed to be rigged into your skirted trolling lures, and live baiting hooks, which as the name suggests are for use when running live baits such as yellowtail, slimey mackerel, bonito and small to medium tunas. In Australia when live and dead bait fishing for most billfish species, anglers opt for circle hook patterns as these are the best on the fish, and simply work very efficiently.

Trolling hook patterns come in different gauges or wire thicknesses, with thinner gauge models for use on lighter tackle such as when targeting sailfish, small black marlin and striped marlin, through to heavier gauge hooks when running blue marlin lures on 37 and 60kg line classes.

Game fishing hooks must be made strong throughout, and have very sharp, strong points in particular, as penetrating a hard mouthed billfish requires a hook that is up to the task. Many brands such as Fudo, BKK, Gamakatsu, Quick Rig, Owner and Eagle Claw have hand ground or chemically sharpened points to give you the confidence to fish them straight out of the packet.
