Strengthening Our Fishing Community
At Fishing Station, we’re passionate advocates for fishing. Not only is it an enjoyable pastime, but it also fosters strong relationships, supports mental wellbeing, and deepens our connection to the environment. It’s also one of the most sustainable ways to source a healthy, fresh meal.
To help grow the fishing community, we work closely with our partners to deliver learn-to-fish programs that inspire more people to get involved. We proudly support a wide range of fishing events and actively advocate to ensure the voice of recreational fishing is heard within the wider community.
Fighting Against Fishing Closures
Sydney is an incredible fishery for recreational anglers and spearfishers—but access is increasingly under pressure. Proposals for “no-take zones” and “fish sanctuaries” in areas like Mona Vale, Long Reef and Balmoral are gaining traction, and as a community, we have to ask—why?
We strongly support conservation. But any changes must involve fair, meaningful consultation with the recreational fishing and spearfishing community. As fee-paying anglers, we already contribute to fisheries management and follow strict regulations to help protect our waterways and reefs—so why are we being denied access?
Staying informed is critical to ensure no decisions are made without proper community input. Below is a snapshot of groups currently advocating for fishing closures.
Friends of Bongin Bongin Bay
Website - https://bonginbonginbay.org/
- Advocating for the closure of fishing at Mona Vale Beach and surrounding rocky headlands under the designation of a “marine sanctuary.”
- Previously lobbied council and government, but were unsuccessful in progressing their proposal.
- Continue to campaign for closure, aligning their efforts with the government’s “30 by 30” conservation targets, with a stated goal of achieving sanctuary status by 2027.
Friends of Collaroy Basin Sanctuary

- Recently rebranded from “Snorkel Squad,” adopting a more formal structure similar to other advocacy groups.
- Currently promoting a proposal to restrict fishing along a 453m stretch (approximately 15%) of Long Reef.
- While the area may seem small, approval could set a precedent, potentially leading to further closures and encouraging similar proposals elsewhere.
Wyargine Aquatic Friends
Website - https://www.wyargine.org.au/
- Advocating for fishing restrictions along sections of coastline around Chinamans Beach and Balmoral Beach.
